CHAPTER 15

April returned to the crochet club table lost in her own thoughts. Wesley was nowhere to be found, and Lucy was busy chatting with one of the locals, so she sipped hot cocoa from a takeout cup and ruminated on Matthew’s conversation.

“Hey, miss. What is this?” A little boy not much taller than the table pointed at another of April’s botched stuffed animals. This one was meant to be a pig, but even she could admit that it looked more like a misshapen blob of cotton candy.

She narrowed her eyes, noticing that a notebook had been left on the corner of the table. She recognized it as the one Paige had been jotting in earlier. Stepping on her tiptoes, she scoured the full street for a sign of that strawberry blonde bob and found that the reporter had been enrolled in the next round of Jo’s bake-off competition.

She wore a blue apron, covered in flour and eggs as she aggressively stirred a whisk into her mixing bowl.

Huh.

April knew it was terrible, but temptation prickled through her. She just wanted a peek; see whether Paige had recorded anything of interest to gage whether April still had a chance of outshining her.

“Lady?”

Oh, right. The kid was still waiting for an answer.

She pasted on a friendly smile and crouched to meet the kid’s level. “What do you think it is?”

The boy tilted his head as though faced with a truly unsolvable puzzle. “Um, chewed up bubble-gum?”

Wow. That bad, huh? “Would you like to buy it?”

“No.”

She rolled her eyes. “Then shoo, please.”

After batting him off, she carefully slid the notebook closer, crouching under the table to hide as she opened it up. It was half-full, ink scrawled across many pages. She flipped to the most recent entry, finding all the shenanigans April had missed out on listed down and some information about the fire given from Kate, labeled here as Officer Greenley.

“Ha! No first name basis for you, Paige Stevens.” Kate insisted everyone call her by her first name, so either she hadn’t extended that privilege to an outsider, or Paige didn’t befriend her well enough. April, on the other hand, reached friendly “Kate” status a while back.

A breeze blew without warning, turning the pages over. It landed on a strange, haphazard scribble that April could barely decipher. “You need to work on your handwriting, too.”

She squinted as the shapes finally formed into something intelligible.

Cabin on North Trail? Footprints found nearby.

It meant nothing to April, but the words still lingered. Footprints?

Was Paige looking for someone?

She sighed and flicked through a final time, pausing when she found a line of capital letters.

CALL MONICA.

It wasn’t the sentiment that stood out to her. Clearly, this was a memo rather than notes collected for a story.

But the spiky vowels and soft consonants, just slightly varied sizes against one another, were so familiar that April turned cold.

With trembling fingers, she pulled out the newspaper clipping.

Sure enough, the writing was so similar it could have been done by the exact same hand.
